DTF vs. Screen Printing: Which Costs Less?

There is no universal quantity where DTF or screen printing becomes cheaper. DTF puts more of its decoration cost on every piece; screen printing puts more into fixed job setup that can be spread across more pieces. Which costs less depends on your shop and the specific job.

How each method's cost is structured

DTF — mostly per piece

Relatively little job-specific color setup. Cost is driven by:

  • Transfer size and cost
  • Purchased vs. in-house transfers
  • Quantity and print locations
  • Pressing and handling labor
  • Equipment, waste and overhead

Screen printing — more fixed setup

Setup grows as colors and locations increase. Cost includes:

  • Screens, preparation and registration
  • Ink and impressions
  • Printing labor and curing
  • Cleanup and equipment
  • Waste and overhead

Both methods also carry the blank, production labor, equipment, shop overhead and waste — a fair comparison includes all of them.

Why quantity changes the comparison

Because screen printing has more fixed setup, adding pieces spreads that setup thinner. DTF's per-piece decoration cost doesn't shrink the same way. That's why quantity can shift the relative economics — but quantity is not the only variable.

What moves the crossover point?

More screen print colorsGenerally increases screen-print setup and production requirements.
More quantitySpreads screen-print fixed setup across more pieces.
Larger DTF printIncreases transfer and material requirements.
Multiple locationsAdds another setup for screen printing and another transfer and press for DTF.
Shop labor costAffects each workflow differently, because their labor happens at different steps.
Equipment and production speedChanges the actual cost of each method in your shop.
WasteRaises delivered cost — a ruined blank costs the same either way.
Purchased vs. in-house DTFCan materially change DTF transfer economics.

The only useful crossover point is your shop's crossover point for the specific job.

DTF vs. screen printing FAQ

Is DTF cheaper than screen printing?
It depends on the shop and the job. DTF has more of its decoration cost per piece; screen printing has more fixed setup that can be spread across more pieces. Colors, quantity, print size, locations, labor, equipment and waste all change which one costs less.
At what quantity is screen printing cheaper than DTF?
There is no universal quantity. The only useful crossover point is your shop's crossover point for the specific job. Price the same job both ways with your own numbers to find it.
Does the number of colors matter for DTF?
DTF transfers are full color, so adding colors has little job-specific setup effect. Transfer size, quantity and locations matter more. In screen printing, each added color generally increases setup and production requirements.
Does buying DTF transfers vs. printing in-house change the comparison?
Yes. Purchased transfers and in-house printing have different cost structures — vendor price per transfer versus film, ink, powder, equipment, labor and waste — which can materially change DTF economics.
